As of the end of January, the Legal Aid Department had received 359 applications for legal aid from those affected in the deadly Wang Fuk Court fire.
The department says that among the 359 applications received, more than 60 percent involved property damage claims, and around 10 to 20 percent pertained to death or personal injury claims. Some applications also involved inheritance-related matters.
The department has set up a task force to process the applications, hoping to complete the processing within three months after receiving the applications, and approve the applications as early as mid-March.
The department also notes that the application form has been simplified to meet the needs of those affected at the Wang Fuk Court fire -- some documents have been waived submission. Donations and assistance received by the victims will not be counted towards their income.
The Task Force has set up counters and service hotlines in seven transitional housing units to answer victims' queries.
