Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, reportedly had a drone fly near the presidential palace, triggering the air-defence system and prompting bursts of gunfire. However, local media reported that the drone involved belonged to the Venezuelan military.
Near the presidential palace in Caracas, on Monday night there were reports of intensive gunfire and explosions. Tanks and infantry fighting vehicles were seen on the streets.
Eyewitnesses said a drone flew close to the presidential palace, and the noise triggered the activation of the air-defence system, lasting for several minutes.
Local media reported the incident was likely a military “blunder”: the drone in question actually belonged to the military, and it’s suspected that jittery soldiers opened fire after seeing a shadow pass by.
US media also quoted White House officials saying the United States had nothing to do with the gunfire incident in Caracas, suggesting it was a misunderstanding caused by poor communication among different security units.
