New Year's Eve celebrations have got underway in New Zealand.

In Auckland, half a tonne of fireworks are being launched from the city's iconic Sky Tower to ring in 2026.

Six months of planning were put into the show.

The rigging of the equipment for the fireworks display weighed some 1.6 tonnes and includes around 14 kilometres of cables.

The New Year's Eve show comes with severe thunderstorm warnings having earlier been issued for Auckland and nearby areas.
