117 Wang Fuk Court residents wrote to CE asking for rebuilding on original site

117 residents of Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po have signed a petition to Chief Executive John Lee, requesting the rebuilding of the housing estate on the original site. 

The government said it is currently collecting different opinions from the residents and will make recommendations as soon as possible based on the actual situation.

More than a month after deadly fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, the future of nearly 2,000 residents remains uncertain.

117 affected residents sent a petition to Chief Executive John Lee and officials.

The letter said:
 “The sudden disaster has left residents homeless and stripped them of the foundation of life they have built with their families and neighbors over the years.

Wang Fuk Court is not just a housing estate, but also the home of its residents, a place where generations have lived. Many residents have lived here for many years, supporting each other and becoming like family. The estate holds their memories.

Residents earnestly request the government to rebuild Wang Fuk Court on its original site, allowing them to return to their familiar place and continue living peacefully with their families and neighbours.

For the disaster victims, reconstruction on the original site is not just about housing arrangements, but also about comfort for the soul, and the only way to rebuild dignity and hope.”

The residents who signed the petition came from all eight blocks of Wang Fuk Court.

The government said it has received the letter and the Chief Executive has instructed the head of the emergency accommodation arrangements task force, Deputy Financial Secretary Michael Wong, to study and propose different long-term solutions. 

These solutions will consider the individual circumstances and wishes of different residents, while also ensuring efficient use of resources.

The government said it is listening to and summarising the different opinions of the disaster victims and, based on the actual situation of Wang Fuk Court, including structural safety, technical feasibility, and community planning factors, will conduct a comprehensive assessment and make recommendations on long-term solutions as soon as possible.
