The government on Tuesday welcomed the Land Tribunal’s approval on dissolving the management committee of the Wang Fuk Court owners’ corporation.
The court had said Hop On Management, a property company under the Chinachem Group will take over “indefinitely” to provide more systemic and professional management of the residential blocks.
Speaking to the media after the tribunal’s decision, home affairs minister Alice Mak said this means that a professional body will now be managing issues related to the deadly fire's aftermath.
“We all can see and understand that the management committee of Wang Fuk Court is plainly unable to carry out its duties…to competently manage Wang Fuk Court in the unprecedented circumstances now faced by its owners,” Mak said.
“We hope that with the assistance from the professionals and the professional property management company, that is Hop On, residents of the Wang Fuk Court, their welfare and benefits can be properly and legally safeguarded,” she added.
Mak noted that the company is experienced in property management and has sufficient resources to deal with complicated issues at the estate.
The minister said the firm will immediately take over after mandatory appointment procedures, and would clarify legal responsibilities and rights of owners and the owners’ group, as well as hiring professionals to audit accounts.
She stressed that Hop On is temporarily assuming functions of the original management committee, and the takeover will not undermine the decision-making authority of Wang Fuk Court homeowners.
Mak also said that to ensure transparency and openness, consultations will be made with residents when it comes to significant property management proposals and decisions in the future.
